EffectiveBrand Newsletter - July 2006

Hi, toolbar builders!
Thanks for your comments to last month's dare to share initiative in which we published great toolbar stories. Keep sending good stuff. This month we have an interview with an Internet savvy publisher who shares some insights on how to build a leading toolbar with thousands of downloads a day.

In this issue:
  • New! User-defined shortcuts
  • Tips to toolbar success
  • Customize Your Search Page
  • Get Sticky - How to increase your toolbar's stickiness

Take the Shortcut to Useful Applications

We've recently added a feature that enables your users to add shortcuts to applications from the toolbar. Having shortcuts to Messenger, Word, Excel and a calculator (to name a few) increase toolbar stickiness and turn it to an integral part of users' online experience.

It's really very simple:
  • Open the drop-down menu next to the toolbar logo and click on "Toolbar Options"
  • Click on the "Extras" tab (some may see it as "Useful Components") and choose the shortcuts that you want.
For now this is only available in IE but will be available in Firefox soon.
Start spreading the news to your users.

Tips to Toolbar Success:
How do you get over 17,000 downloads in a week?

The entrepreneur behind Radio Netherlands Toolbar Spills the Beans

Guy L, a web publisher and internet entrepreneur loves music. When he discovered his love is shared with millions of Dutch speakers who are exposed to over 140 radio stations, he figured a toolbar would be the ideal solution for people on the web. And so the Radio Netherlands Toolbar - http://www.radio-toolbar.nl was born.

Q. What do you consider as your toolbar's major benefits?

Instead of visiting hundreds of sites, wondering whether or not they have news feeds, The radio player does the job. It's easy and very effective. I added tens of live TV feeds and useful links such as news, games, weather, etc.

Q. How many downloads did you expect to receive?

My prediction was around 80 daily downloads. I was amazed to get over 2500!! The constant flow of great feedback and compliments made me realize that I came up with the right toolbar solution at the right time. It's a question of supply and demand. People were waiting for this kind of toolbar.

Q. What do you as an entrepreneur get out of your toolbar?

I added some links to affiliate programs, which I found extremely worthwhile financially. I submitted my toolbar to search engines and to freeware/shareware directories such as download.com and tucows.com and even to Mozilla.

(Editors note: We beat him to it last month :) Check out our item on how to submit your toolbar to Firefox Add-ons.)

If things keep going this way, I may soon quit my day job...

Q. Finally, any good tips for building a successful toolbar?

Stickiness is a key issue when it comes to building a toolbar. EffectiveBrand offers fantastic components. I added the E-Mail Notifier and Weather Component which definitely increase toolbar stickiness.

Customize Your Search Page

You may already know how to customize your search page. If so, feel free to skip this item. Those who don't, it's a great way to brand your search page, get more recognition and awareness. This works if you use our hosted search results. (You can easily change your toolbar's search to our hosted results, powered by Ask).

Here's how to do it:
  1. Login to your account
  2. Go to the "Search Page" tab
  3. Choose the "Use your logo" option
  4. Upload your logo (You can use an image of any dimension. For best results, upload an image which is about 69 X160 pixels.)
  5. Enter an optional URL for the logo
  6. Click "Save"

Get Sticky:
How to increase stickiness - E-Mail Notifier

Last month we talked about how the toolbar radio is a great way to make your toolbar stay installed longer. July's stickiness tip is equally effective: It's the E-Mail Notifier. It might sounds obvious, but you'll be amazed at how much stickier your toolbar becomes with this simple yet genial component.
We got fantastic feedback from you. Terrapin Joe Esquire wrote: "Three cheers for the developers of this neat add on". "It's absolutely great. I really missed such a service for a very long time" wrote Simone Kraan. "Innovative thinking" was Bharath Kumar's feedback on the E-Mail Notifier that is so value adding to the users.

Until next month, be good.
